Candace vs. Reading

It's not that I don' t like to read...it's that I like a lot of other things more. Which is probably terrible to admit, since I kind of write for a living...but either way, it's the truth. But maybe one that's slowly changing.

I just finished listening to a "book on tape" (aka my iPod). Kathryn Stockett's The Help is amazing.

Have any of you read it? The story takes place during the Civil Rights Movement in Jackson, Mississippi. The lives of two best friend black housekeepers and a hopeful white writer collide and we all learn a lot about life together. It's about race and equality, but mostly just about people and relationships. It's about food and friendship. It's funny and sad and real. It will open your eyes.

My next literature adventure will be reading the Anne of Green Gables books.

I'm embarrassed to admit I've never read the entire series. Especially since I can't even count the millions of times I've watched the movies. I told my cousin I have never read it and she was shocked. I promptly came home and read her reasons for reading about Anne. And she's right on all accounts. Anne is heroic, the author (Lucy Maud Montgomery) is most-definitly an artist and paints the most vivid people and places, there's an awesome love story, and it is simply inspirational. Oh boy! I'm off to read it!

  1. How wonderful that you are going to read the AGG series. I cannot express how much I love everything Anne. I even have my carrot top doll tucked away...And don't get me started on how I had the biggest crush on Gilbert...

  2. I haven't read them either. And I even had an Anne of Green Gables Birthday party. Kind of hypocritical, eh?

  5. You must have had a terrible mother. Where was she during your growing up years? Cooking or something? I think you're reading at justs the right time. Enjoy.
